Estimated Native Range
Summary
Heuchera chlorantha, commonly known as Tall Alumroot, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the open woodlands and forest edges of the Pacific Northwest to British Columbia, particularly in areas with rocky slopes and well-drained soils. It exhibits a moderate growth rate, reaching heights of 0.8-1.5 feet (0.24-0.5 meters) and spreading 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) wide. The plant forms a basal rosette of rounded, lobed leaves, and its greenish flowers, though not particularly showy, appear on slender stems above the foliage in the spring and summer months.
Tall Alumroot is valued for its foliage texture and mounding habit, making it an excellent choice for ground cover, border fronts, rock gardens, and woodland settings. It is also appreciated for its drought tolerance once established, and its ability to attract pollinators with its flowers. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium draining loam or sandy soils. While it requires medium amounts of water, it is relatively low maintenance and can tolerate drier conditions. Gardeners should be aware that Heuchera chlorantha can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is also prone to foliar diseases like rust and powdery mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
