Estimated Native Range
Summary
Heuchera cylindrica, commonly known as poker alumroot or roundleaf alumroot, is a perennial herb native to the rocky mountainous regions of western North America, including British Columbia, California, Wyoming, and Montana. It is often found in open woodlands, cliff-side ledges, and sub-alpine meadows, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. This plant typically forms a low mound of foliage, with basal, oval to round leaves that can be lobed or toothed, and reaches up to 35 inches in height when in flower. The bell-shaped flowers, which can be pale yellow, cream, green, or pink, are borne on erect, leafless stems and add subtle color to the garden in late spring to early summer. The flowers are not particularly showy but do attract pollinators.
Heuchera cylindrica is valued for its mounding foliage and its adaptability to a range of garden settings, including rock gardens, borders, and woodland gardens. It is appreciated for its ease of maintenance and tolerance of drought once established, although it performs best with consistent moisture. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, humus-rich soil and can thrive in both full sun and part shade, making it versatile for various garden designs. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Heuchera cylindrica is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but gardeners should be aware of potential leaf scorch in full sun and the need for division every few years to maintain vigor.CC BY-SA 4.0
