Summary
Heuchera elegans, commonly known as Urn-Flowered Alumroot, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the chaparral and oak woodlands of California, particularly in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains. It typically forms clumps up to 12 inches (30 cm) tall and wide, with multi-lobed, rounded basal leaves that are green to reddish-green in color. The plant produces erect, drooping inflorescences up to 18 inches (45 cm) tall, which bear clusters of bright pink or magenta bell-shaped flowers that bloom profusely in the spring and early summer, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
Urn-Flowered Alumroot is valued for its showy flowers and foliage, which add color and texture to shaded garden areas. It is often used in wildlife gardens, natural landscaping, and as ground cover or border plantings in residential gardens. This species is adaptable to a range of light conditions, from full sun to part shade, and prefers medium amounts of water with well-draining soil. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. Heuchera elegans is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, making it a reliable choice for gardeners. It is also appreciated for its resistance to deer and other herbivores.CC BY-SA 4.0
