Summary
Heuchera pilosissima, commonly known as Seaside Alumroot, is an evergreen perennial herb that thrives in the native habitat of coastal bluffs, cliffs, and slopes, as well as creek banks in California and Oregon. This species is particularly adapted to the unique conditions of the Pacific coast, where it contributes to the stabilization of soil and supports local pollinators. Seaside Alumroot typically exhibits a clumping form with a maximum height of over half a meter. The erect inflorescence is notable for its glandular hairs and bears dense clusters of rounded, hairy flowers. Each flower showcases lobes that are pink or yellowish, tipped with small white or pink petals, and the stamens and stigma conspicuously protrude from the narrow mouth of the flower, adding to its ornamental value.
Seaside Alumroot is valued for its attractive foliage and flowers, which add texture and color to shaded garden areas. It is often used in border planting, rock gardens, and as ground cover, especially in coastal landscapes. This plant is drought-tolerant and requires low amounts of water, making it suitable for xeriscaping and gardens with fast-draining soils. It prefers part shade to full shade conditions, which mimic its natural understory habitat. While generally low-maintenance, gardeners should be aware of potential issues with rust and mildew, especially in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
