Summary
Hibiscus dasycalyx, commonly known as Neches River rosemallow, is a woody perennial herb native to the floodplains and wetlands along the Neches River in Texas. It is a rare species, with only a few natural populations remaining. The plant can grow up to 8 feet tall and is characterized by its T-shaped leaves and large, showy flowers that bloom from July to September. The flowers are typically white to pale pink with a deep red center, attracting both visual admiration and pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Neches River rosemallow is valued for its striking flowers and its ability to thrive in wet, swampy conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens and naturalized wetland plantings. It prefers full sun to partial shade and requires consistently moist to wet soil conditions. Due to its rarity, it is not commonly found in cultivation, but it can serve as an attractive and ecologically beneficial addition to gardens in suitable climates. Gardeners should be aware of its federal threatened status and strive to obtain plants from reputable nurseries that propagate them responsibly.CC BY-SA 4.0
