Summary

Hibiscus mutabilis, commonly known as Dixie Rosemallow, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to China and Taiwan, where it is found in a variety of habitats including forest margins, open woodlands, and along riverbanks. It is hardy in USDA zones 7 to 11 and can behave as a perennial in the cooler parts of its range. Typically, it reaches heights of 12–15 feet (3.7–4.6 meters) with a woody trunk in warmer climates, but it is often smaller, around 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 meters), in cooler areas. The plant is noted for its large, showy flowers that are 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) in diameter, which open white or pink and transition to deep red by evening, a phenomenon known as "floral color change." The ’Rubra’ cultivar is particularly known for its red blooms. Flowering occurs from summer through fall, and the flowers are especially attractive to pollinators.

Dixie Rosemallow is valued for its rapid growth, large and changing flower colors, and its ability to provide a long season of blooms. It is used in cultivation for ornamental purposes, including as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, and in cottage gardens. It requires full sun to partial shade, rich, well-drained soil, and moderate watering. While it can be propagated by cuttings, which root most easily in early spring, it can also be propagated throughout the growing season.CC BY-SA 4.0
