Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hudsonia ericoides, commonly known as Pine Barren Goldenheather, is an evergreen shrub or subshrub native to the coastal plain heathlands, pine barrens, and sandy soils of the Northeastern United States, particularly New Jersey, and parts of Eastern Canada. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters) and can spread to about 1 foot (0.3 meters) wide. The plant forms a dense mat and is characterized by its needle-like foliage and bright yellow flowers that bloom in the spring and summer, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Pine Barren Goldenheather thrives in full sun and well-drained, acidic, sandy soils, reflecting its adaptation to the harsh conditions of its native habitat. It is drought-tolerant and requires low amounts of water once established. This plant is valued for its ability to stabilize sandy soils and is often used in restoration projects and naturalistic plantings. It is also suitable for rock gardens and as a ground cover in sunny, dry areas. While it does not tolerate shade well, it is resilient to wind and humidity. Gardeners should be aware that it may not compete well with more aggressive plants and can be sensitive to overwatering and rich soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
