Summary

Hyacinthoides italica, commonly known as Italian Bluebell or Italian Squill, is a bulbous perennial herb native to woodlands and meadows in the Mediterranean region, particularly in Italy. It typically grows to a height of 10–40 centimeters (3.9–15.7 inches). The plant forms clumps of linear leaves, and in spring, it produces a dense, conical or pyramid-like raceme with 5-30 bright violet-blue, star-like flowers, each with two narrow bracts. The flowering period extends from February to May, with the blooms being moderately showy and attracting pollinators such as bees.

Italian Bluebell is valued for its vibrant spring blooms and is often used in woodland gardens, rock gardens, and as underplanting for deciduous trees. It is relatively low maintenance, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in part shade, making it suitable for dappled sunlight conditions. It prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter. While it is not prone to serious pests or diseases, it can be susceptible to bulb rot if kept too wet. This plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its excellence for garden use. It can naturalize by seed and bulb offsets, but is not typically invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
