Summary
Hymenocallis latifolia, commonly known as Mangrove Spider-Lily or Perfumed Spiderlily, is a bulb-forming perennial herb native to coastal habitats such as maritime forests, coastal prairies, and estuarine margins in Florida and the Caribbean. It is often found in areas with brackish water, such as the edges of mangrove swamps, where it contributes to the stabilization of the shoreline. This species typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) with a similar spread. The Mangrove Spider-Lily is notable for its large, fragrant, white flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, with each flower consisting of six long, narrow, curved petals and a prominent central stamen structure. The flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators such as moths. Following flowering, it produces large green seeds that can reach up to 2.5 cm in diameter.
The Mangrove Spider-Lily is valued for its striking flowers and is used in cultivation for ornamental purposes in water gardens, rain gardens, and as a naturalizing plant in coastal landscapes. It is relatively easy to maintain, provided it has access to consistent moisture. While it prefers full sun or part shade, it is adaptable to a range of light conditions. The plant requires soil with medium to fast drainage and can tolerate brackish water, making it suitable for coastal areas. There are no major disease issues, but it can be sensitive to cold temperatures and may require protection in cooler climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
