Summary
Hymenocallis occidentalis, commonly known as Northern Spiderlily, is a perennial herb that can be deciduous or semi-deciduous depending on the climate. It is native to wetlands, marshes, and along streams and rivers in the Southeastern and Central United States. This plant typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters), featuring strap-shaped leaves and showy, fragrant white flowers with long, slender petals and a central cup, blooming in the summer months.
The Northern Spiderlily is valued for its striking flowers which can add an exotic touch to water gardens, bog gardens, and pond margins. It is also suitable for rain gardens due to its high water requirements. The plant prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate standing water, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing in appropriate wetland habitats. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires soil with medium to slow drainage. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to spider mites and aphids in dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
