Summary

Hymenosporum flavum, commonly known as Sweet Shade or Native Frangipani, is a rainforest tree native to the coastal rainforests and moist eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. It is an evergreen tree that, in its natural habitat, can grow up to 20 meters tall, but typically reaches around 8 meters in cultivation. The tree has a slender form with branches that form widely spaced tiers, creating an attractive, layered appearance. From September to October, it produces clusters of fragrant flowers that are initially cream in color, aging to yellow and orange, and are approximately 5 cm in diameter. These flowers are highly attractive to bees, honey-eating birds, and butterflies. Following the flowering season, long pear-shaped seed capsules develop. The leaves are dark green and glossy, usually around 10 cm long and 4 cm wide.

Sweet Shade is valued for its fragrant flowers and its ability to create a tropical ambiance in gardens. It is often used as a specimen tree or planted in groups for a more dramatic effect. The tree is relatively low-maintenance, tolerating a range of soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained soil with a high organic content. It can be grown in shaded positions but flowers best in full sun. While it generally requires low amounts of water, it will benefit from regular watering during dry periods. Sweet Shade is adaptable to different soil types, provided they have medium drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
