Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hypoxis hirsuta, commonly known as Common Goldstar or Yellow Star Grass, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, grassy plains, and meadows across Central and Eastern Canada, the Eastern United States, and down to Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) and spreads 4-6 inches (10-15 cm). The plant forms clumps of grass-like leaves and bears star-shaped, bright yellow flowers from late spring to early summer, which are quite showy and attract pollinators.
Common Goldstar is valued for its low maintenance and its ability to thrive in a range of conditions, making it suitable for wildflower gardens, rock gardens, and borders. It is also used in restoration projects due to its adaptability. While it prefers moist, well-drained soils, it can tolerate drier conditions once established. It is also relatively pest and disease-free, making it a trouble-free addition to the garden. However, it may not compete well with more aggressive plants and can be overtaken in mixed plantings.CC BY-SA 4.0
