Estimated Native Range
Summary
Idesia polycarpa, commonly known as the Iigiri tree or Wonder tree, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to the warm temperate regions of East Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, where it thrives in mixed forests, valley woodlands, and along riverbanks. This species typically grows to a height of 26-69 feet (8-21 meters) with a broad, rounded crown. The leaves are large, heart-shaped, and glossy green, turning yellow in the fall. In late spring to early summer, Idesia polycarpa produces panicles of small, yellow-green flowers that are not particularly showy but have a pleasant fragrance. The flowers are followed by clusters of small, round berries that mature to a dark purple-red color and are edible, though not widely consumed.
The tree is valued for its attractive foliage and the ornamental appeal of its fruit, which can persist into winter, providing visual interest and food for birds. It is used in cultivation for urban planting, as a shade tree, and occasionally in large gardens and parks. Idesia polycarpa prefers full sun to part shade, moist but well-drained soils, and is relatively low maintenance once established. It is not known for any significant disease or pest problems, but it can spread through root suckers, which may require management in a garden setting.CC BY-SA 4.0
