Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ilex integra, commonly known as Mochi Tree, is an evergreen tree native to coastal forests, thickets, and valleys in Japan, Taiwan, Koea, and parts of China. It typically grows to a height of 15-20 feet (5-6 meters) and a width of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters). The Mochi Tree has a dense, rounded form with smooth, gray bark and small, glossy, dark green leaves. It produces inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in the spring, followed by black drupes that are attractive to birds. The tree is named for its leaves’ resemblance to the rice cake ’mochi’.
The Mochi Tree is valued for its compact size and evergreen foliage, making it suitable for use as a screen or hedge in residential landscapes. It is also planted in urban environments due to its tolerance of pollution and salt. This species prefers well-drained soils and can adapt to a range of soil types, from acidic to slightly alkaline. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring little pruning, and is drought-tolerant once established. However, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and may require protection from strong winds.CC BY-SA 4.0
