Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ilex latifolia, commonly known as Tarajo Holly, is an evergreen tree or large shrub native to the broad-leaved evergreen forests of south-central and southeast China and Japan. It typically grows to a height of 20-23 feet (6-7 meters) and a width of 7-12 feet (2.1-3.7 meters). The plant has a dense, pyramidal form when young, becoming more open with age. It features large, glossy, dark green leaves and bears small white flowers in late spring, which are followed by bright red berries in the fall and winter, providing seasonal interest.
Tarajo Holly is valued for its attractive, spiny-toothed foliage and decorative berries that persist into winter, making it a popular choice for visual interest in gardens. It is used for screening, as a specimen plant, or in a mixed shrub border. This holly prefers acidic to neutral soil, tolerates a range of drainage conditions, and requires full sun to partial shade. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and holly leaf miner. It is also important to plant a male pollinator nearby to ensure berry production on female plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
