Estimated Native Range
Summary
Inga feuillei, commonly known as Pacay or Ice-Cream Bean Tree, is a fast-growing evergreen tree, though it may be semi-deciduous in cooler parts of its range. It is native to tropical rainforests and riparian zones in South America, particularly in Ecuador, Peru, and northern Brazil. This species can reach a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) and a width of 15-25 feet (4.5-7.5 meters). It has a spreading canopy with pinnate leaves and produces showy inflorescences of cream, yellow, and white flowers in the spring, followed by large, edible, pod-like fruits that contain a sweet, cottony pulp.
Pacay is valued for its rapid growth and the dense shade it provides, as well as for its resilience to disease and fire. The fruit is a notable benefit, being both edible and a source of food in its native region. It is often planted as a shade tree in tropical landscapes, and its fruit is consumed fresh or used in desserts. While it tolerates a range of soil types, it prefers full sun and medium amounts of water with well-draining soil. It is also used in agroforestry systems due to its ability to fix nitrogen and improve soil fertility. However, it can be sensitive to frost, which may damage the tree at lower temperatures.CC BY-SA 4.0
