Summary
Ipomoea indica, commonly known as Oceanblue Morning-Glory, is an evergreen vine native to tropical and subtropical forests, coastal scrub, and disturbed areas in Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central and South America. It is a vigorous, long-lived climber that can reach lengths of up to 12 meters (39 feet). Its twining stems enable it to climb over other plants, walls, and slopes, often forming dense mats. The plant features heart-shaped or 3-lobed leaves and produces showy, funnel-shaped flowers that are purple or blue and 6–8 cm (2–3 in) in diameter, blooming profusely from spring to autumn. The flowers are hermaphroditic, containing both male and female reproductive structures.
Oceanblue Morning-Glory is valued for its rapid growth and vibrant flowers, making it a favorite for trellises, arbors, and fences in warm climates. It is also used as a ground cover to stabilize soil on slopes. This species thrives in well-draining, fertile soil and requires regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. While it is frost-sensitive, it can be grown in temperate regions in greenhouses or as an annual. Gardeners should be cautious, as Ipomoea indica can become invasive outside its native range, particularly in Mediterranean climates. It is known to smother native vegetation and may require management to control its spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
