Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ipomoea lobata, commonly known as Firecracker Vine, is a deciduous perennial vine native to tropical and subtropical regions of Mexico and Brazil. It can grow to a height of 15-20 feet and a width of up to 15 feet. This vigorous climber is known for its cascading racemes of tubular flowers that transition in color from red to orange, yellow, and white as they mature, blooming profusely from summer to fall. The flowers are quite showy and attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
The Firecracker Vine is celebrated for its fast growth and the spectacular display of multicolored flowers that resemble small firecrackers, hence its common name. It is often used to cover trellises, fences, and arbors in warm climates. In cooler regions, it is grown as an annual. It thrives in full sun and requires medium amounts of water with well-draining soil. While it is not particularly demanding regarding soil type, it does best in rich, loamy soils. Gardeners should be aware that in some areas, it can become invasive due to its rapid growth and self-seeding habit. To prevent this, it is advisable to remove seed pods before they mature.CC BY-SA 4.0
