Summary
Iris halophila var. sogdiana, commonly known as Sogdiana Saltmarsh Iris, is a perennial herb with a rhizomatous, creeping habit, native to saline soils in meadows, marshes, and riverbanks of Central Asia. It has green, sword-like, linear leaves that are 4-12mm wide, tapering to a point and somewhat compressed. The radical leaves are as long as the stems, linear, and can be up to 10 cm broad, while the cauline leaves are progressively smaller. This iris typically bears 3 to 4 terminal flowers on each stem, which bloom between June and July. The flowers are noteworthy for their resilience in harsh conditions, making it the most hardy among the Spuria irises.
The Sogdiana Saltmarsh Iris is valued for its ability to thrive in saline conditions and its striking foliage, which provides textural contrast in garden settings. It is often used in water-wise landscaping, naturalized plantings, and as an accent in perennial borders. While it prefers partial shade, it can also tolerate full sun if provided with medium amounts of water and well-drained soil. This species is relatively low-maintenance but should be monitored for common iris problems such as iris borer and fungal leaf spot.CC BY-SA 4.0
