Summary

Iris koreana, commonly known as dwarf woodland Korean iris, is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial that is part of the beardless iris group. This species is native to the temperate woodlands of Korea, where it thrives under the canopy of deciduous trees, often in areas with dappled sunlight. It typically grows to a modest height of 15-20 cm (6-8 inches), with a clumping habit that makes it suitable for small-scale ground cover. The dwarf woodland Korean iris blooms in early summer, between April and May, featuring 2 terminal flowers at the top of each stem. The flowers are small, about 3 cm (1 in) in diameter, and display a range of yellow hues from bright to pale. Following the flowering period, in June and July, it produces distinctive green, globose seed capsules.

The dwarf woodland Korean iris is valued for its ease of cultivation and its ability to spread, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, rock gardens, and as a ground cover in partially shaded areas. Its preference for moist, rich soils that range from strongly acidic to alkaline, along with its tolerance for part sun to light shade, makes it a versatile plant for many garden settings. While it requires more moisture during the growing season, especially in winter and spring, it is relatively low-maintenance. Propagation is commonly achieved through division of the rhizomes or by seed. Gardeners should be aware that while it is easy to grow, it can spread and should be managed to prevent unwanted naturalization.CC BY-SA 4.0
