Summary
Iris longiscapa, commonly known as the Long-Scaped Iris, is a rhizomatous perennial herb native to rocky slopes and meadows in Central Asia. It is characterized by its grass-like leaves and striking lilac-violet or blue-purple flowers that appear on a tall, slender stem. This species typically forms dense tufts of plants through the spread of small, nut-like segments produced annually. The fibrous remains of previous seasons’ leaves can be found atop the rhizome, while a robust network of thick roots lies beneath. The slender stem, or peduncle, reaches 50–75 cm (20–30 in) in height, supporting short pedicels (flower stalks) that are 5–7.5 cm (2–3 in) long. Each pedicel bears 2–5 showy flowers that bloom between April and May, offering a brief but beautiful display.
The Long-Scaped Iris is valued for its ornamental flowers and is suitable for rock gardens, borders, and as a specimen plant in areas where its winter hardiness is not an issue. It requires a period of summer dormancy when it should be kept dry after flowering. While it is not hardy in Europe and requires protection such as a pot or cold greenhouse, it thrives in loamy soils with good drainage. For optimal growth, it should be placed in full sun and watered sparingly, with soil that provides medium to fast drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
