Summary

Iris nigricans, commonly known as Black Iris, is a perennial herb, is the national flower of Jordan. It is native to the grasslands and open woodlands of the eastern Mediterranean, specifically in Jordan and Palestine. Iris nigricans typically grows to 35 cm (14 in) in height and features striking blackish-purple flowers that are 12–15 centimeters (4.7–5.9 in) in diameter. The flowers bloom in the spring and are highly regarded for their unique, deep coloration. The foliage consists of recurved leaves that complement the dramatic appearance of the blooms.

The Black Iris is valued for its distinctive flowers, which can add a bold statement to garden beds and borders. It is often used in rock gardens, as a specimen plant, or in naturalized areas where its color can be showcased. This iris requires full sun to thrive and prefers well-drained soil, ideally with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. While it does need regular watering during the growing season, it is important to avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent bulb rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
