Estimated Native Range
Summary
Iris pseudacorus, commonly known as Yellow Flag, is a deciduous perennial herb native to wetlands, marshes, and along the margins of ponds and rivers in Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia. It typically grows to a height of 100–150 cm (39–59 in), though it can occasionally reach up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in). The plant features erect, sword-shaped leaves that can be up to 90 cm (35 in) long and 3 cm (1.2 in) broad. The striking bright yellow flowers, 7–10 cm (2.8–3.9 in) across, bloom in late spring to early summer and have the characteristic iris form. The fruit is a dry capsule containing numerous pale brown seeds.
Yellow Flag is valued for its showy flowers and ability to naturalize in wet areas, making it a popular choice for water gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized wetland plantings. It is also used for erosion control along waterways. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soils with medium to fast drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can become invasive in some regions and should be planted with care to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
