Estimated Native Range
Summary
Iris speculatrix, commonly known as Small-Flower Iris, is a deciduous perennial herb that originates from the grasslands and meadows of Central and Southeastern China. This species typically grows to a height of 0.7-0.9 feet (21-27 cm) and a width of 0.7-1 feet (21-30 cm). It features narrow, grass-like leaves and produces small, yet striking, blue and purple flowers with a yellow or white crest on each fall, blooming in late spring to early summer. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy due to their vibrant colors.
The Small-Flower Iris is valued for its delicate blooms and is often used in rock gardens, borders, and as a ground cover. It is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal water once established, and thrives in well-drained soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to iris borer and root rot if grown in poorly drained soils. This species is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
