Summary
Isocoma acradenia, commonly known as Alkali Goldenbush, is a semi-deciduous subshrub native to coastal sage scrub and desert washes in California, Baja California, and Nevada. It typically grows to a maximum height of slightly over 1 meter (39 inches), with a bushy habit and erect, branching stems that are shiny pale yellowish-white, maturing to a yellow-gray. The stems are adorned with linear or oval-shaped glandular leaves, 1–6 cm (0.39–2.36 inches) long, which are gray-green and age to pale gray or tan, sometimes with small teeth along the edges. From late summer to fall, Alkali Goldenbush produces clusters of flower heads at the tops of the stems, each containing many golden yellow disc florets that are showy and attract pollinators. The fruit is an achene with a pappus that aids in wind dispersal.
Alkali Goldenbush is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in harsh conditions, making it suitable for xeriscaping and restoration projects. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, as a border shrub, or for erosion control on dry slopes. This subshrub prefers full sun exposure and requires minimal water once established, thriving in well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
