Summary
Ixora coccinea, commonly known as Jungle Geranium, is an evergreen shrub native to the tropical monsoon forests of Southern India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. It has been widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical gardens, including South Florida. The plant typically grows to a height of 4-12 feet and features glossy, leathery leaves. Its dense clusters of small, tubular flowers are most commonly scarlet, but can also be found in shades of pink, orange, and yellow, blooming year-round in its native habitat. The flowers are showy and attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Jungle Geranium is valued for its continuous flowering and vibrant color, making it an excellent choice for hedges, foundation plantings, or container plants in warm climates. It thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and requires moderate to high humidity. Full sun to partial shade is ideal for optimal blooming. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages more prolific flowering. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering promotes lush growth. Ixora coccinea can be susceptible to chlorosis in alkaline soils and may be affected by pests such as scales and spider mites.CC BY-SA 4.0
