Summary
Jacksonia scoparia, commonly known as Dogwood, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to open eucalypt woodlands and forest margins in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. It typically reaches up to 12 meters in height and has a distinctive broom-like appearance due to its greyish, leafless branches. The yellow ’pea’-type flowers, characteristic of the Fabaceae family, bloom in October and November, forming racemes on the upper branches and adding a splash of color to the landscape. The flowers are moderately showy and attract pollinators.
Jacksonia scoparia is valued for its unique form and yellow flowers, which can brighten up gardens and natural landscapes. It is used in cultivation for ornamental purposes, as well as for soil stabilization and rehabilitation of degraded lands due to its nitrogen-fixing ability. The plant is drought-tolerant and can provide fodder for cattle during dry periods. It is suitable for sunny to part-shaded positions and adapts to a range of soil types, preferring those with medium to slow drainage. Propagation is straightforward from seed after pre-treatment with boiling water, and cuttings also root with relative ease. Care should be taken as it may not tolerate heavy frosts.CC BY-SA 4.0
