Estimated Native Range
Summary
Jacobaea maritima, commonly known as Silver Ragwort, is an evergreen perennial herb or subshrub native to coastal areas, cliffs, and rocky slopes in the Mediterranean region, including parts of the Balkans. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-2 feet (15-60 cm) and a width of 0.5-1 feet (15-30 cm). Silver Ragwort is characterized by its striking silvery-gray, felt-like foliage and daisy-like flowers that bloom in summer, displaying colors ranging from yellow centers to white and cream petals. The flowers are moderately showy and attract pollinators. This plant is particularly noted for its ornamental foliage.
Silver Ragwort is valued for its drought tolerance, fire resistance, and ability to withstand browsing by deer, making it suitable for xeriscaping and coastal gardens. Its salt tolerance also makes it an excellent choice for seaside plantings. The cultivar ’Silver Dust’ has been recognized for its finely cut foliage and has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water. It is adaptable to various soil types, provided they have good drainage. Silver Ragwort can be used as ground cover, in rock gardens, or as an edging plant due to its compact size and texture. However, gardeners should be aware that it can spread aggressively in some conditions and may require control measures to prevent it from becoming invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
