Estimated Native Range
Summary
Jasminum angulare, commonly known as Wild Jasmine or Angular Jasmine, is an evergreen shrub native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa, where it thrives in bushveld and thicket vegetation. It typically grows to a height of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) with a similar spread. The plant features dark green, glossy, pinnate leaves and produces clusters of white, star-shaped flowers that are strongly scented, particularly at night, attracting pollinators and birds. The flowering season extends from spring to autumn, with the blooms being especially showy and abundant.
Wild Jasmine is valued for its fragrant flowers and year-round foliage, making it a popular choice for ornamental gardens, hedges, and as a screening plant. It is also used in containers and can be trained as a climber on trellises. This species requires well-drained soil, moderate watering, and can be grown in full sun to semi-shade. While it is not frost-tolerant and needs protection in colder climates, it can be successfully cultivated under glass in temperate regions. In the UK, Jasminum angulare has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its horticultural value.CC BY-SA 4.0
