Estimated Native Range
Summary
Jasminum humile, commonly known as Italian Yellow Jasmine, is a semi-evergreen shrub native to the Himalayas and western China, where it thrives in open woodlands and on rocky slopes. It typically grows to a height of 2.5–4 m (8–13 ft) and spreads up to 3 m (10 ft) wide, forming a roundish shape with thick stems. The plant features stout, dark green leaves that are 5 cm long, with 5-7 imparipinnate leaflets. In regions with mild winters, Italian Yellow Jasmine retains its foliage throughout the year, but in colder climates, its foliage and buds may suffer from freezing. The shrub is adorned with clusters of usually six yellow, fragrant flowers during the spring and summer months, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
Italian Yellow Jasmine is valued for its fragrant yellow flowers and the extended blooming period that adds color and scent to gardens. It is often used in ornamental plantings, as a specimen shrub, or for informal hedges. The cultivar ’Revolutum’ has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its exceptional qualities for garden use. This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade, and it requires low to medium amounts of water, making it relatively drought-tolerant once established. It adapts to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it may need protection from harsh winter conditions in colder zones. Pruning can be done after flowering to maintain shape and promote vigorous growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
