Summary

Jubaea chilensis, commonly known as Chilean Wine Palm, is an evergreen tree native to central Chile, specifically the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Santiago, O’Higgins, and northern Maule. This palm is notable for its massive size, ranking as the second most massive of the known palm species, surpassed only by certain varieties of Borassus aethiopum. It thrives in Mediterranean climates within its native range, often found in valleys and foothills where it can access deep groundwater. Jubaea chilensis can reach up to 82 feet (25 meters) in height and develops a thick, sturdy trunk with a diameter of up to 5 feet (1.5 meters). Its grayish bark and crown of pinnate leaves, which can extend 16-20 feet (5-6 meters), make it a distinctive and imposing presence in the landscape.

The Chilean Wine Palm is valued for its resilience and longevity, often living for several centuries. It produces small yellow flowers that are followed by purple fruits in the spring through fall, although flowering can be infrequent in cultivation. The palm is utilized for ornamental purposes in parks, large gardens, and as a street tree in regions with a similar climate to its native habitat. It requires full sun exposure and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it can withstand periods of drought once established, it benefits from regular watering during extended dry spells. Gardeners should be aware that this palm has a slow growth rate, which should be considered when planning a landscape.CC BY-SA 4.0
