Summary

Juncus conglomeratus, commonly known as Compact Rush, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a variety of wet habitats including marshes, fens, wet meadows, and the edges of ponds and streams across Europe and temperate Asia. It is particularly associated with lowland damp grasslands in the British Isles, where it is one of six rush species that can dominate these ecosystems. Compact Rush typically grows to a height of 15-60 cm (6-24 inches) and is characterized by its dense, tufted clumps of cylindrical, green stems. The plant produces small, brownish flowers from June to August, which are clustered tightly together at the top of the stems, though they are not particularly showy.

Compact Rush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and provide habitat for wildlife in wetland areas. It is often used in the restoration of natural wetlands and can also be incorporated into rain gardens and water features in cultivated landscapes. This species prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from clay to loam. It is best grown in full sun to part shade conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it can spread vigorously in suitable conditions and may require management to prevent it from becoming too dominant.CC BY-SA 4.0
