Summary
Juncus mexicanus, commonly known as Mexican Rush, is a perennial grass that can be evergreen or semi-deciduous depending on the climate. It is native to wetlands, streambanks, and moist meadows, primarily in the southwestern United States and Mexico, with a separate population in South America, including Chile. This plant typically grows to a height of 0.5-2 feet (0.15-0.6 meters) and can spread to about 3 feet (0.9 meters) wide. Mexican Rush has a clumping habit with upright, cylindrical, green stems and inconspicuous brown flowers that appear in summer.
Mexican Rush is valued for its adaptability to wet conditions and is often used for soil stabilization near water bodies, in rain gardens, and as an accent in water features. It is also appreciated for its low maintenance and ability to provide vertical texture in landscape designs. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, preferring consistently moist soils with slow to medium drainage. While it is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, it can self-seed and spread in ideal conditions, which should be monitored to prevent unwanted naturalization.CC BY-SA 4.0
