Juncus tenuis, commonly known as Slender Rush, is a semi-deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, grasslands, and especially riparian zones across North America. It typically grows between 15 and 60 cm tall. The plant features basal leaves that are shorter than the slender, erect stems. The stems are adorned with sheaths and topped with distinctive clusters or cymes, which bear small egg-shaped seed capsules. When mature, the seeds split into three parts. Slender Rush also propagates through its rhizomatous root system.
Slender Rush is valued for its adaptability and is often used for erosion control and wetland restoration due to its ability to thrive in moist conditions. It is also utilized in rain gardens and as a filler in mixed plantings. While it is not commonly sold as a household container plant, it can be found in nurseries specializing in native or wetland plants. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, from medium to high moisture, and is adaptable to various soil types with varying drainage capabilities.
