Estimated Native Range
Summary
Juncus textilis, commonly known as Basket Rush, is an evergreen perennial grass native to wetlands, including marshes and riparian zones, primarily in California and Northwestern Mexico. It can reach a height of 1–2 meters (3.3–6.6 ft) and is characterized by its upright, cylindrical, and unbranched stems, which give it a reed-like appearance. The bushy inflorescence, which arises from the side of the stem, splits into long branches bearing clusters of many small flowers. Each flower is subtended by small, clear bractlets and features pointed greenish-brown tepals. The plant has six stamens with prominent anthers, and the fruit is a dark brown, shiny capsule.
Basket Rush is valued for its architectural form and textural interest in garden settings, often used in naturalistic plantings and as an accent in water gardens or boggy areas. It is also traditionally used in basket weaving, hence its common name. This plant is relatively low maintenance, tolerating a range of soil types, provided they are moist. It can grow in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water with good drainage. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to rust and smut, especially when grown in overly dry conditions. Basket Rush is not typically invasive but can spread via rhizomes to form dense stands.CC BY-SA 4.0
