Summary

Juniperus chinensis, commonly known as Chinese Juniper, is an evergreen tree or shrub native to East Asia, including China, Myanmar, Japan, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It typically grows to a height of 50-60 feet in its natural habitat, but there are also slow-growing dwarf varieties like ’Shimpaku’ that only reach a height and spread of 3 feet and 5 feet respectively after a decade. This species has a variable form, with both needle-like and scale-like leaves, and produces blue-black, berry-like cones containing 2-4 seeds. It is often dioecious, with separate male and female plants, but some individuals can produce both sexes of flowers.

Chinese Juniper is a popular choice for gardens and parks, especially in coastal areas, due to its adaptability and ornamental appeal. It is also frequently used for bonsai. However, it is potentially invasive outside its native range, so caution is advised when considering it for cultivation in non-native areas. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.CC BY-SA 4.0
