Estimated Native Range
Summary
Juniperus conferta, also known as Shore Juniper, is an evergreen shrub native to the scrublands of Japan. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters) and spreads to a width of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters). This plant is characterized by its dense, prickly foliage that displays a fresh yellowish-green color, reminiscent of a well-maintained lawn. Its compact growth habit and attractive foliage make it a popular choice for ground cover, especially in coastal gardens.
In cultivation, Shore Juniper thrives best in full sun and requires medium amounts of water. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, tolerating both acidic and alkaline soils, but insists on good drainage. It is also tolerant of herbicides such as glyphosate, making it a resilient choice for urban and suburban landscapes. Despite its prickly nature, it is often grown as bonsai for its aesthetic appeal. Its low-growing, spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for erosion control on slopes and embankments.CC BY-SA 4.0
