Summary

Juniperus foetidissima, commonly known as foetid juniper or stinking juniper, is an evergreen tree native to mountainous regions such as the Caucasus, Alborz, and other ranges in southeastern Europe and Western Asia. It typically grows up to 82 feet (25 meters) tall with a trunk diameter of up to 8 feet (2.4 meters), featuring a conical to irregular crown. The leaves are green, scale-like, and when crushed, emit a strong, unpleasant odor, hence the common names. This species produces blue-black, berry-like cones that are actually modified cones called "arils," which are eaten by birds and other wildlife. Foetid juniper is adapted to dry, rocky soils and is often found in subalpine zones and on limestone cliffs.

Foetid juniper is valued for its durable, rot-resistant wood, which is used for various construction purposes, including fence posts and fuel. In cultivation, it is sometimes used as an ornamental tree for its unique appearance and tolerance of harsh conditions. It requires well-drained soils, can tolerate drought once established, and prefers full sun to partial shade. While not commonly used in urban settings due to its odor when disturbed, it can be considered for naturalistic plantings and reforestation projects. There are no popular garden cultivars of this species. Potential problems include juniper blight and root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
