Summary

Juniperus squamata, commonly known as Flaky Juniper, is an evergreen shrub or occasionally a small tree native to the mountainous regions, rocky slopes, and alpine forests of South Asia and Southeast Asia, including the Himalayas. It typically reaches 2–10 meters (6+1⁄2–33 feet) in height, with distinctive flaky brown bark and a prostrate to irregularly conical crown. The foliage consists of broad, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls of three, often displaying a striking glaucous blue-green color. The species is known for its decorative, berry-like cones that are glossy black and ovoid, maturing in about 18 months, with male cones releasing pollen in early spring. Flaky Juniper is largely dioecious, with separate male and female plants, but occasionally monoecious individuals occur.

Flaky Juniper is appreciated for its bluish foliage, compact habit, and adaptability to a range of garden settings. It is commonly used for ground cover, rock gardens, and as a specimen plant in urban and residential landscapes. This juniper thrives in full sun and can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, from slow to fast drainage, requiring medium amounts of water. It is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to juniper blight and root rot if not properly cared for. Gardeners should be aware of its potential to become invasive in some regions, particularly where conditions closely resemble its native habitat.CC BY-SA 4.0
