Estimated Native Range
Summary
Justicia candicans, commonly known as Arizona Water-Willow, is a semi-deciduous shrub native to the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, specifically found in riparian zones, washes, and arroyos within the Southwestern USA and Northwestern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters) and a width of 2 feet (0.6 meters). The shrub has an upright, multi-branched form with narrow, elongated leaves. It produces tubular flowers that are a striking combination of orange and red, blooming profusely in the spring and again in the fall, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
Arizona Water-Willow is valued for its vibrant flowers and ability to thrive in hot, dry climates, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and xeriscaping. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, as a border specimen, or for adding color to rock gardens. This plant prefers part shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It requires moderate watering and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. While generally low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to aphids and whiteflies. Pruning after flowering can help maintain a tidy appearance and promote bushier growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
