Summary
Justicia flava, commonly known as Yellow Justicia, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats in tropical Africa, including savannas, light woodlands, and grasslands. It is often found in damp locations such as near streams or in areas with seasonal flooding. This plant typically reaches up to 60 cm in height and has a bushy growth form. The bright yellow, tubular flowers are borne in terminal spikes and are most prolific throughout the warmer months, although in some regions, it may flower year-round. The flowers are attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Yellow Justicia is valued for its continuous flowering habit and vibrant color, which can add interest to tropical-themed gardens or mixed borders. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring minimal care once established. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soils, moderate watering, and full sun to partial shade conditions. While not commonly used in Western horticulture, it has potential as an ornamental in suitable climates. In addition to its ornamental uses, Justicia flava has a history of medicinal use in traditional African medicine, where it is used to treat fevers, headaches, and other ailments. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
