Summary

Justicia kanal, commonly known as Brazilian Plume Flower or Flamingo Flower, is a perennial herb native to the Atlantic Forest ecoregions of eastern Brazil, where it thrives in the understory of moist, shaded areas. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1.5-2 feet (0.46-0.6 meters) and a width of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters). This plant is characterized by its lush, green foliage and plume-like inflorescences of pink or purple flowers, which are quite showy and bloom throughout the summer months. The flowers are tubular, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies, and are complemented by the plant’s soft, hairy leaves.

Brazilian Plume Flower is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it an excellent choice for adding color to darker areas of the garden. It is commonly used in border plantings, as an accent in tropical gardens, or as a container plant. In cultivation, it prefers part shade to full shade and requires consistently moist soil, rich in organic matter. It is best grown in medium or slow-draining clay or loam soils with high water retention. While it is not drought-tolerant, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. It is generally free from serious pests and diseases but can be affected by aphids and spider mites in dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
