Summary
Justicia sonorae, commonly known as Sonoran Water-Willow, is an evergreen or semi-deciduous subshrub native to riparian areas, wetlands, and moist habitats in the Southwestern USA and Northwestern Mexico. It typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant is characterized by its upright form and slender stems. The leaves are lance-shaped and glossy, contributing to its textured appearance. It produces tubular, purple flowers that are quite showy and bloom year-round in warmer climates, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
Sonoran Water-Willow is valued for its continuous flowering and ability to attract wildlife. It is often used in water-wise gardens, as a border plant, or in naturalized areas where its flowers can provide visual interest throughout the year. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate partial shade and requires medium amounts of water, making it relatively easy to maintain. It thrives in soils with fast drainage. Although not commonly afflicted by serious pests or diseases, it can be sensitive to overwatering, which may lead to root rot. Gardeners should be cautious not to plant it in areas prone to flooding or with poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
