This vine is native to the understory of temperate forests in China, where it climbs trees and shrubs to reach light. It typically grows between 2.5 and 3.5 meters in height. The male flowers exhibit colors ranging from red to cream, while the female flowers are generally cream-colored. Notably, the sepals of the female flowers curve inward to form a dome shape, whereas the sepals of the male flowers curve slightly upwards but remain open. The Chinese Kadsura Vine is valued for its fruit, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is suitable for growing in semi-shaded areas of gardens, where it can be trained along trellises or allowed to climb trees.
