Kalanchoe alternans, commonly known as Paddle Plant, Desert Cabbage, or Flapjack Plant, is a succulent plant native to the arid landscapes and rocky outcrops of Madagascar. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant is characterized by its large, rounded, fleshy leaves that are often a gray-green color with red margins, especially when exposed to sunlight. The leaves are arranged in a rosette pattern, giving the plant a sculptural appearance. The yellow flowers, which are showy, bloom in the spring and are held above the foliage on tall stalks.

The Paddle Plant is valued for its unique foliage and low maintenance requirements, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, succulent collections, and as a container plant. It is drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal water, making it suitable for xeriscaping. When grown indoors, it adds a striking architectural element to the decor. It is important to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. The plant prefers full sun to part shade and does best in sandy or loamy soils with excellent drainage.
