Summary
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, commonly known as paddle plant or flapjacks, is a succulent perennial herb native to the rocky outcrops and grasslands of southern Africa, including Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa, and Eswatini. It forms a basal rosette of large, rounded, fleshy leaves that are pale green with red margins, which become more pronounced under bright sunlight. The plant typically grows to about 2 feet in height and width. When it blooms, usually in late winter to early spring, it produces a tall flowering stalk, up to 3 feet, that bears clusters of greenish-yellow flowers with waxy surfaces and yellow lobes. After flowering, the stalk dies back.
The paddle plant is valued for its sculptural foliage and ease of care, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, succulent collections, and as a container plant. It prefers full sun to light shade and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Watering should be reduced during the dormant winter period. Overwatering and poor drainage are common issues that can lead to plant demise. In cultivation, it is important to differentiate it from the closely related Kalanchoe luciae, which it is often confused with in horticulture.CC BY-SA 4.0
