Estimated Native Range
Summary
Kleinia barbertonica, commonly known as Succulent Bush Senecio, is an evergreen succulent or subshrub native to rocky outcrops and dry bushveld in Southern Africa, particularly in South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. It can reach over 2 m (6 ft) in height and width, with a fleshy trunk and light green, cylindrical, finger-like leaves that are 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) in length. The plant is notable for its clusters of sweetly scented, golden-yellow, tufted flower heads that bloom in winter, typically from July through September. The fragrant yellow flowers are 1 cm (3⁄8 in) wide and 8 cm (3 in) long, appear terminal on the stems, and are highly attractive to butterflies, especially the painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui). After flowering, it produces seeds with a dense tuft of bristles.
Succulent Bush Senecio is valued for its drought resistance and low maintenance requirements, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and rock gardens. It is also appreciated for its winter flowering period when few other plants are in bloom. The plant is hardy to at least −4 °C (25 °F) and thrives in full sun with low or very low water needs, preferring soils with fast drainage. While it is generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. It is not known to be invasive and can be propagated from cuttings or seeds.CC BY-SA 4.0
