Estimated Native Range
Summary
Knautia macedonica, commonly known as Macedonian Scabious, is a deciduous perennial herb native to grasslands and open woodlands in Southeastern Europe. It typically grows to a height of 75 cm (30 in) and features a clumping form with deeply lobed leaves. From early to late summer, it produces a profusion of rich red "pincushion" flowers, similar to those of its close relative Scabiosa, on slender, upright stems. The flowers are particularly showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Macedonian Scabious is valued for its vibrant flower display and its ability to thrive in a range of garden settings, including borders and wildflower meadows. It is also suitable for cut flower arrangements. This plant is extremely hardy, tolerating temperatures down to −20 °C (−4 °F) and below. It prefers a sunny position and can adapt to neutral or alkaline soils with medium drainage. While it may be short-lived, its tendency to self-seed ensures a continual presence in the garden. Gardeners should be aware that in some conditions, it can spread vigorously.CC BY-SA 4.0
