Summary

Kunzea ericoides, commonly known as kānuka or white tea-tree, is a tree or shrub native to a wide range of ecological habitats in New Zealand, including coastal and lowland scrub, montane forests, and areas recovering from disturbance such as fire. It is found from Te Paki in the far north to Stewart Island in the south. Kānuka can grow up to 59 feet tall and is characterized by its soft leaves, which are a key feature distinguishing it from the similar but prickly-leaved mānuka. It produces white or pale pink flowers with five petals and up to 25 stamens, which are in bloom from October to February, offering a long flowering season.

Kānuka is valued for its hardy nature and its ability to colonize land recovering from fires, making it useful in reforestation and erosion control projects. The flowers provide a source of nectar for native insects. In cultivation, kānuka prefers well-drained soils and full sun to part shade conditions. It is relatively low-maintenance once established and can be used for ornamental purposes, as well as for practical uses such as tool handles and firewood. Kākāriki parakeets have been observed using the leaves and bark of kānuka to rid themselves of parasites. While it is not commonly known for having aggressive roots or being particularly prone to diseases, it can be susceptible to root rot if planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
