Estimated Native Range
Summary
Lactuca tatarica, commonly known as blue lettuce, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including meadows, steppes, and semi-desert regions across Europe and Asia. It can reach up to 2 feet in height and is characterized by a large taproot and a basal rosette of leaves, with most of the larger leaves located near the base. The plant produces flower heads that consist of about 20 striking blue or purple ray flowers, typically blooming from July to September. There are no disc flowers present. The flowers are not particularly showy but do add a subtle splash of color to the landscape.
Blue lettuce is valued for its drought tolerance and can be used in wildflower gardens, naturalized areas, or as part of a meadow planting. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal water once established and thriving in well-drained soils with full sun to part shade. However, gardeners should be cautious as Lactuca tatarica can be potentially invasive outside its native range, and it is advisable to check local regulations before planting. It is also known for its medicinal properties, as many Lactuca species contain compounds with sedative and pain-relieving effects.CC BY-SA 4.0
